The Ozone Controversy (Assignment #2)

While I think it's definitely a good idea that the UN (and subsequent governments) have taken control of the CFCs being released into earth's atmosphere, I'm not completely convinced that the ozone depletion was caused solely or predominantly by that CFC release into the atmosphere.

As we discussed in class, there really isn't any way to determine if CFCs (and human intervention) have really made all that much of a difference compared to the normal cycle earth experiences. That being said, I think limiting the source of a potential hazard is in the best interest of humankind; we may not fully understand CFCs and their effects on earth and its atmosphere, but as the old adage goes, 'it's better to be safe than sorry.'

The absolute banning of CFC usage may have been a bit drastic considering the rather 'scary' circumstances under which they were banned, but it would probably just be a waste of time to try and bring them back into manufacturing or regular usage again - not to mention the controversy it would inevitably create once again.

A Bit Skeptical...

I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical when I first walked into the Chem 107 classroom. Having previously taken two years of chem in high school and a higher chem class at Wright State, I assumed I would be taking a really easy class that would require minimal effort.

I was surprised to find a relatively laid back professor who was easy to understand; my previous experience with a Wright State Chemistry professor wasn't exactly golden. I'm glad and almost relieved to find that I will actually learn something in this class, instead of the easy ride to an A I was expecting (though an easy A would have been nice on my GPA...)

I'm not too sure what to expect, considering I missed the technical first day of class, but I'm ready to find out what exactly I'm in for during this quarter.
